FEATURED SCHOOL: KING CHARLES THE 1ST, KIDDERMINSTER

Not many Heads have the vision to appoint a full time Business and Enterprise Manager. Tim Gulliver does. Eileen is a lady with a head for business. Her ideas are unusual, her expectations high.

Eileen first asked me to get involved with a group of students who were taking part in an enterprise competition and who’d been invited to present at the 3 Counties Show, Malvern. Their project was called  Columbian Fruit Challenge and the audience would include Fernado Alzate from the Columbian Embassy. My brief was to develop their presentation skills, in 2 sessions! The presentation involved mixing fruit cocktails as well as speaking to the audience so, part of the project was to make sure that everyone was involved in the role best suited to him/her. Everyone had a great day, even though we didn’t win.

The summer term was barely over when Eileen contacted me again, this time with a request to train a gifted and talented group. Having won a local Enterprise Competition, they wanted to present their ideas to Andrew Gibson, Chairman (in wheelchair) and David Lawrence, Managing Director of Lawrence’s, the largest recycling business in the Midlands. My brief was not to influence the content of the presentation; simply to make sure it was as professional as possible. Feedback from their Chairman included the following, “….their presentation was so insightful and interesting that we are now awaiting even more feedback.”

With this project completed, I was back with the Columbian Fruit group. I’ve never set up a Community Interest Company before, never had to advise how you get a company articled. Outside advice was required. But the application was successful and  brought in £500. Cattleya’s first commercial event, in mid February, has brought in sales of over £400.
