Kirk Russell

The telephone call  seemed run of the mill at first. “I’ve got an interview on Monday. I haven’t been for a job interview for a long time. I think I could do with some training. If I’m short listed, I’ve been told I’ll be presenting to a panel of senior people, in which case I’d like you to give me some training in presentation skills.” Not unlike a lot of requests I receive, until I asked Kirk if he could tell me a bit about himself and what the job entailed. The job he was applying for was Head of Sports Medicine Academy at Manchester City Football Club. Kirk had previously held the post of physio to the England Cricket Team during 3 successful Ashes winning series as well as during their ICC 2020 World Cup win. His experience included interview on Radio and T.V. and his job references included Andrew Strauss, England Cricket Captain……and this guy wanted interview training!

The more I talked with Kirk, the more it became clear to me that here was a classic example of a person whose attitude was, “If you want to perform at the highest level, you need a coach.” Can you imagine Andrew Strauss saying he no longer needs a batting coach? Working with Kirk was a pleasure and a privilege. On this occasion, Kirk did not land the job; but we’re still in touch. He will achieve his ambition of breaking into the world of Premier Division Football.
