SUCCEEDING AGAINST THE ODDS
It's a tough old world out there right now. It would be easy to get discouraged; but there's really no need to be feel discouraged, as long as you get real about what you need to do to succeed. Your next step after your exams may be applying for an apprenticeship, a course at a college or university, or a full time time salaried job, depending on what stage you've reached.
APPRENTICESHIPS
These are becoming increasingly popular and rightly so. However, there are far more applicants than available apprenticeships. This means that you will almost certainly be called for an interview which will be hardly any different from a full time job interview.
COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY COURSES
Colleges and Universities are reducing the number of places available at a time when the number of student applications is rising. You are most likely to be interviewed for a place if:
- You're applying to Oxford or Cambridge
- You're applying for a traditional academic course at a Red Brick University.
- You're applying for a course which is popular and likely to be oversubscribed. e.g. I.T.
If you interview successfully, you will be accepted subject to exams grades. If you are unsuccessful, you will probably rejected even before you sit your exams. This is a heartbreaking outcome.
JOB INTERVIEW
It won't be good enough to satisfy your interviewer that you are good enough to do the job. There will be lots of candidates who are able to do this. You have to impress more than all the other candidates who are good enough. If you want to land the job, you have to be memorable. Only memorable is good enough. Only if you're memorable will you be good enough to leave the interviewer thinking he/she would be a fool to offer the job to anyone but you. That's the outcome you want isn't it? Do you know how to be memorable, rather than just good enough?
