NOTES ON INTERVIEW TECHNIQUE

I’ve used the word technique, and techniques are important; BUT only when applied with conviction. Conviction is critical to your success. The tone of your voice, as well as your body language, must convey the highest level of self belief. This is not easy when you haven’t had the success you were hoping for. You have to discipline yourself to act “as if.” As if what? As if you believe that:

You are the candidate that all the others have to beat.

You are the one that all the other candidates should be worried about.

Yes, you are out to sell yourself, but you’re also there to establish whether the interviewer deserves to have a person as good as you in his/her team.

I am not encouraging arrogance. Arrogance is bad; but that’s not the point. The point is that, unless you project your belief that you’re that good, why would the interviewer believe you either? The truth is that the interviewer will never rate you higher than you appear to rate yourself.

INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES

Interview techniques are important; but interview techniques are not as important as approaching the interview with the right attitude of mind. The right attitude of mind helps your interview technique more than anything else. So what is the right attitude of mind?

Go to the interview believing that you are the candidate all the other candidates ought to be worried about.

This is not about being big headed; but no interviewer is going to rate you higher than you rate yourself.

Selling yourself is not about telling the interviewer how good you are. That’s not selling yourself. That’s boasting. You need to demonstrate how good you are without actually saying how good you are? That’s what selling yourself is all about.

Your first goal at the interview is to convince the interviewer that to offer the position to any other candidate would be a foolish move.

Your second goal is to encourage the interviewer to convince you that, if you were offered the job, you would be a fool not to accept.

With the right attitude of mind, the interview techniques will often take care of themselves.

INTERVIEW PREPARATION

It’s one of the commonest complaints made by interviewers, “Candidates come completely unprepared.” That’s good news. If your interview preparation is good, you already have a head start over your competition.

Here are the basics of good interview preparation.

Visit the employer’s website. Print off a few pages. What will you be expected to know? What questions might you be asked? What questions would you like to ask the interviewer?

Read your own C.V. as if you were the interviewer. What questions would you ask? Have you got a well prepared answer to these questions?

Gather together everything you need to take to the interview and do it the night before.

Do you know how to find the place?

Do you have a contact telephone number in case you run late? Interviewers will not hold it against you if you’re delayed. They will hold it against you if you don’t bother to let them know.

Have you got your mobile phone? Is it charged up?

If you can’t put a tick against every one of these, your interview preparation is not as good as it ought to be.

INTERVIEW COACHING

If your little girl wanted to learn to ride a horse, where would you take her? A professional riding school, right? If your son wants to lean to drive, who do you approach? A professional driving instructor, right? And you expect to pay. You don’t approach Uncle Tony because Uncle Tony will do it for free! How about an interview coach?

We all like a bargain; but when it comes to the things that really matter in our lives, like the house we live in, the car we drive, a meal out, we do not opt for the cheapest we can lay our hands on. We buy the best we can afford. Maybe interview coaching doesn’t rate that high.

When it comes to the things that we value most, including the career prospects of our children, pound shop mentality does not pay off. Maybe interview coaching is not something we value all that much!

If you want to be a champion at anything, you need a coach. Ask Usain Bolt, ask Roger Federer, ask Venus and Serena Williams. Interview coaching is no different, not if you want your son or daughter to be a champion.

Only memorable will be good enough part2

I was watching a T.V. program which addressed the question of what a degree is worth these days. Some pretty alarming statistics emerged from the program. Graduate unemployment has reached a 17 year high; this at a time when student loans have never been higher. Graduate unemployment is running at 20% compared with a national unemployment rate of 7.9. As a parent, what do you advise? Do you advise your son/daughter to go for it any way; or do you encourage them to seek a job after “A” levels? The decision is made further complicated by the fact that, with so many graduates out there, many jobs that you could apply for straight from school ,now require a degree.

Before deciding what advice to give, the following points should be taken into account.

Some careers require a degree. E.g. Law, Medicine.

Not all degrees carry equal weight with employers. A degree in a traditional academic subject from one of the Oxbridge Universities is valued highest, followed by the top 20 red brick universities. (The Russell group). Tell an employer that you can offer a degree in Golf Course Management or Hair Dressing and he’s more likely to laugh at you!

Remember the law of supply and demand. If the number of graduates in a subject exceeds the number of job opportunities, your son/daughter may have a problem. This is the reason that unemployment rate among I.T. graduates is high, in spite of the fact that there is no shortage of jobs in this sector.

Whatever the chosen career, the successful job candidate will have to impress the interviewer more than all the other equally well qualified candidates. Only memorable will be good enough.

A young lady was being given the chance to tell listeners how difficult it is to get a job. “The problem is,” she said, “that there are at least 50 candidates for every job I go for; so I only ever have a 1 in 50 chance of getting the job.” The implication is that all candidates have an equal chance. No they don’t. One candidate will be more memorable than all the others and this candidate has a 100% chance of landing the job. The other 49 have no chance at all. The secret is knowing how to be the memorable candidate. Only memorable is good enough.

THE RICH ARE GETTING RICHER

We’ve heard it before, a million times: “The rich are getting richer; the poor are getting poorer.” The implication: the rich are exploiting the poor and if only we could persuade the rich to be less well off, we’d get rid of poverty. How true is that?

When I was a boy, the only people who ran marathons were Olympic athletes. If anyone had suggested that ordinary folk like you and me should be running 26 miles, they’d have been told they were crazy. Today, everyone from late teenagers to 8o year old grannies are taking part in marathons. There are more really fit people around today than at any time in living memory. Yet we have a national obesity problem. The fit are getting fitter, the fat are getting fatter. Why? Because those who are fit and healthy repeat the behaviours that got them fit and healthy in the first place, while obese people also repeat the behaviours that got them fat in the first place. Does that mean that the answer to the obesity problem is to persuade fit people to stop being so healthy? It is all about behaviour and until we recognize that fact, the gap will continue to get wider and wider.

If you are unfit, either physically or financially, it could be because you don’t know the rules for getting fit, or you know the rules but you’re ignoring them. So, how many financially deprived people are queuing up to get the advice of those who know how to earn and to save money?

It’s time they were encouraged to do so.
