The idea came to me as was coming through the supermarket checkout. The girl who served me was taking a gap year. That was my assumption. "No," she said, " I have a degree. I have a 2:1" This, she informed me, was the best job she could get. Neither was she the only one. "You see that girl over there? You see the boy next to her...?" When I graduated, a degree set you apart from the crowd. No longer is this true. No-one can complain that the education system is not delivering. You have a degree? Oh really? Who hasn't? You may even be asking yourself whether a degree is worth the effort and the debt.

Having spent several weeks interviewing employers, the message I have heard time and time again is this: whether you're about to leave school at 16 or whether you're about to graduate, it's  your level of communication skills, or lack of them, that's going to make you memorable at interview. It might be for the wrong reason but if your communication skills are exceptional, you're the one who's going to be remembered when all the candidates have gone home. If you're the one with the exceptional people skills, yours will be the ophone call that says: " The job's yours."
